What You Should Know About Weed Control Fabric

How happy many a gardener would be if their lovingly planted and cared-for flowers, perennials, and crops were only half as stubborn as most native weeds! Because no sooner have you pulled out ground elder, dandelions, chickweed, and the like in one spot, they're already growing back in another.

Blessed is anyone who finds a permanent solution. Especially in perennial and vegetable beds, on paths, or in hard-to-reach flower borders, weeds can become truly troublesome. Weed control fabrics promise an environmentally friendly and very convenient solution, allowing growth only where you intend it.

How Does Such Weed Control Fabric Work?

The way weed control fabric works is that it allows nutrients, air, and water to pass through to the soil, but no sunlight. Most weed species need sunlight to germinate, and even those that can sprout in darkness can't grow through these fabrics. As a result of the lack of light, the young, still-delicate weed seedlings die off. However, any plants you've specifically planted will have their own dedicated planting hole in the fabric, allowing them to grow completely unhindered and normally.

If you use such a fabric in your garden, it's a good idea to add a layer of bark mulch, lava granules, gravel, or similar material on top of it. This protects the fabric from sunlight, which usually significantly extends the lifespan of the plastic. Uncovered fabrics are expected to last up to 5 years, while some manufacturers guarantee covered ones for 25 years. Plus, covering the fabric makes your garden look more natural.

What Should You Look for When Buying?

There are various types of weed control fabric. For example, some manufacturers offer perforated, black films. These have the advantage of promoting growth for desired plants by enriching the soil with warmth. However, especially in wet years, there is a very high risk of mold formation and soil acidification under the film.

Fabrics (Gewebe) are better suited to keep your plants healthy in the long run. These are often called weed fleeces (Unkrautvliese). Because such a fleece allows significantly more air to reach the soil, the earth underneath can dry out better and remain healthy in the long term.

Quality differences arise from the amount of material used, as this determines the density of the fleece. Standard weed fleeces, for example, are specified at about 70g/m². Such a fleece offers reliable protection against most weeds. If you're dealing with more persistent species like horsetail, dandelion, or couch grass, you should opt for a thickness of 120g/m² or more.
