There are many reasons to spark a child's interest in gardening. For one, it lays a great foundation for healthy eating. Kids are much more likely to eat what they've sown, planted, and harvested themselves. Gardening also fosters patience and concentration.

Furthermore, when kids are allowed to grow their own plants, they develop a greater respect for nature. Biodiversity is playfully taught through nature-oriented gardening, and on top of that, little ones learn to take on responsibility.

Parents don't even need their own garden for all of this. Often, a balcony box or a planter on the patio is enough to create a mini-garden for children. Of course, having your own garden plot is also a wonderful adventure and experimental playground for kids.

Raised garden beds are especially practical for both kids and adults. There are even mobile models that can be moved to follow the sun. In these, children can "dig in the dirt" at eye level, so to speak. Raised beds are also advantageous for adults because they're more ergonomic.

To ensure quick successes for young gardeners, it's best to use fast-growing crops, such as radishes (Raphanus sativus), peas (Pisum sativum), sunflowers (Helianthus annuus), cherry tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum), mini sweet peppers (Capsicum annuum), and zucchini (Cucurbita pepo). Additionally, children enjoy shrubs and perennials with edible fruits for snacking, like fruit bushes or trees, strawberries (Fragaria), rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum), and many others. Growing unusual fruit and vegetable varieties that are rarely found in supermarkets is especially exciting for children. These can include unusual potato varieties like "Blue Swede" as well as certain wild fruit shrubs, such as the serviceberry (Amelanchier).

Provided there are no allergies, a hazelnut bush (Corylus) is a must-have in a family garden. This shrub grows relatively quickly and produces delicious nuts that are also popular with squirrels. Additionally, hazelnut branches are great for making skewers for baking tasty stick bread or for other crafts. If the garden is large enough, you can even plant a teepee made of willow branches with the kids. Such a natural tent makes a wonderful retreat for children.

A columnar fruit tree should also be planted in the family garden, especially if there isn't already older fruit-bearing wood present. Young naturalists will enjoy observing animals and insects. A guaranteed magnet for butterflies in the garden is the butterfly bush (Buddleja), which is also a relatively low-maintenance ornamental shrub.

However, edible flowers and tasty herbs or ornamental plants also have the potential to foster a love for gardening, not just among the youngest members of the family. This includes fragrant plants like the chocolate-scented cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus), the true chocolate flower (Berlandiera lyrata), or the cola-scented southernwood (Artemisia abrotanum var. camphorata).

Even elementary school-aged children are perfectly capable of caring for "their own little garden patch," and parents should absolutely encourage this. Through dialogue with their child, parents can discover what plants their offspring are excited about and how much effort they're truly willing to invest. Initially, it might be necessary to remind the little ones to water, but over time, they'll quickly learn when "their" plants need water.

Preschoolers also enjoy digging, sowing, and harvesting. While they might need a bit more support from adults, they are usually enthusiastic about the work.
