Create a garden pond

Location matters

"For most people, an idyllic garden pond is the epitome of a tranquil oasis in their own garden. Nevertheless, only a few dare to create their own garden pond. However, it's not that difficult if you know how it's done.

Start by choosing a suitable spot in your garden. This location should be easily visible from as many places in your garden as possible, especially those where you prefer to spend time.

Partially shaded and the deepest possible areas in the garden are wonderfully suitable."

Your garden dictates the shape

"When planning the shape of your garden pond, you should orient yourself towards the style that already prevails in your garden.

However, don't plan the pond too small, because the larger the pond, the more stable the habitat it offers its inhabitants. This not only means much less maintenance for you but also a more beautiful, diverse, and healthier appearance for your pond.

Once you have created the plan for your pond, it's best to take it to the local town hall to inquire whether you need a permit for its construction. This way, you avoid potential problems from the start and can enjoy your own body of water from day one."

Different materials can be used for construction

"Basically, you have three different options nowadays for creating the basin of your pond. Either by sinking a pre-formed shell into the ground, lining the ground with pond liner, or concreting it.

Plastic pond basins are primarily used for small ponds. They are completely pre-formed, and you only need to dig a corresponding hole in your garden and then cover it with a layer of sand, which protects the basin from being damaged by roots and stones. Additionally, the sand ensures that the basin and your hole fit well together.

You have more freedom in designing your garden pond if you make it waterproof using pond liner. These liners are available in various sizes and qualities in stores, and it is recommended that you get extensive advice on which liner is most suitable for your project.

Dog owners, on the other hand, are usually better advised to concrete their pond. Not only can playful dog claws not harm concreted ponds, but neither can weather influences nor rampant plant roots."
