The spider plant in a hydroponic culture

The spider plant is one of the most popular houseplants. Along with a few other plants, this evergreen plant is ideal for growing in a hydroponic culture.

Spider plants are generally considered low-maintenance among houseplants. They don’t require excessive water or fertilizer, making them perfect for a hydroponic setup.

Water as the Primary Nutrient

Hydroponic cultures are becoming increasingly popular. Normally, plants are grown in soil that provides them with nutrients. In a hydroponic system, however, plants are placed in an inorganic substrate that primarily serves as support rather than nourishment. The plants receive their nutrients solely through watering.

Plants that were previously grown in regular soil usually do not survive the transition to hydroponics. This is why spider plants are particularly well-suited for it. But be careful: if the plant's roots begin to rot, action should be taken. However, with the correct water level, this should not happen.

High-Level Propagation

The spider plant is very popular as a hanging plant. It develops long shoots, known as stolons, at the ends of which small offshoots form. These offshoots can be separated from the end of the shoot and placed in water.

Once the new plants have developed their first roots, they are particularly well-suited for hydroponics. Since they are already accustomed to growing in water, they do not rely on nutrients from soil and adapt more quickly to nutrient absorption from water.

Nutrients in Water

For spider plants to grow and thrive in a hydroponic system, watering is the most crucial factor. This is the only way to supply the plant with nutrients. Special hydroponic fertilizers ensure adequate nourishment for the plant.

The fertilizer should be added to the watering water every time, as it contains all the necessary nutrients. Additionally, it helps bind excess minerals like lime that may be present in the water.
