A Resistant Elm for the City
The Elm - An Ancient Cultivated Tree
The elm (Ulmus) is highly valued and often planted for its stately size, round crown, and stability. As one of Europe's oldest cultivated trees, it even holds a place in the Celtic tree calendar, symbolizing clarity and determination. With its alternate leaf arrangement, the elm shines in a full, rich green canopy. The asymmetrical shape of its leaves is also typical of elms. Before the foliage sprouts, the tree bears numerous reddish-purple flowers that grow in grape-like clusters from the terminal buds in March and April. Native to the Northern Hemisphere, elms prefer a location with ample light and nutrient-rich seepage water. Of the approximately forty different species, three are native to Germany.

Elm Disease (Ceratocystis Ulmi)
In the 1920s, a sac fungus, native to East Asian elms, arrived in Europe via the Netherlands, where it decimated entire tree populations. The primary carrier is the elm bark beetle, which is difficult to control. In response to the fungal spores, the tree forms growths in its vessels, ultimately interrupting its water supply. The tree then dries out.

The elm population has declined to a concerning degree, as many trees still die from the so-called "Dutch Elm Disease" today. The elm population is shrinking. The only way forward is to replant with highly resistant elm varieties!

Ulmus resista 'Fiorente'
The Ulmus 'Fiorente' is an elm variety with a pyramidal to broadly columnar shape. It's a cross between the Field Elm and the Siberian Elm, and among all the Resista elm species, it has the latest leaf drop.

In terms of location, this elm prefers a sunny to partial shade spot and is suitable for almost all soil types. It's considered a fast-growing elm variety. The 'Fiorente' stands out for its very high wind and drought stress tolerance.
