Garden tip: Spherical shapes

With the help of topiary, inconspicuous corners in the garden can quickly be transformed into aesthetic eye-catchers. Whether spiral, archway, umbrella, or box – we can fulfill (almost) every wish in terms of shapes and variety. In this article, we would like to show you how you can integrate spherical shapes into your garden design.

From experience, spherical woody plants are most often used in groups of three or more specimens and in different sizes. This keeps the planting interesting and brings movement into the otherwise rather static garden. As accompanying greenery, we can recommend umbrella-shaped woody plants, which give the green composition a harmonious frame. However, spheres are also popular as eye-catchers in a calm area planting of ground covers and grasses.

"When choosing the plant, it entirely depends on personal taste. Generally, all woody plants with dense growth that tolerate regular pruning are suitable. The most common types are Taxus (yew), Thuja (arborvitae), Ligustrum (privet), and Ilex crenata (Japanese holly). The latter is often used as an alternative to the popular but box tree moth-prone boxwood. However, our insider tip is spherical woody plants with special blossoms or bright ornamental fruit: Syringa (lilac), Malus (crabapple), or Crataegus (hawthorn).

In addition to the ground-level topiary described here, there is also the standard variety with a spherical crown. Whether with or without a trunk – the be-all and end-all of topiary care is regular pruning, which should be done once or twice a year depending on the plant.
