Viburnum tinus

Crocuses, snowdrops, and witch hazel are perhaps the most well-known harbingers of spring. This year, however, we'd like to introduce you to an early bloomer whose large flower umbels have nothing at all in common with those delicate early spring flowers.

Viburnum tinus 'Eve Price', commonly known as the Laurustinus, is related to the winter viburnum (Viburnum bodnantense) and, like its cousin, displays its blooms early in the year. However, the flowers of 'Eve Price' grow in round, numerous cymes (clusters).

Already in autumn, delicate pink buds begin to develop, patiently awaiting the first mild days of the new year. As if kissed awake by the sun, they open in late January/early February into small, white blossoms that profusely adorn the Laurustinus.

This variety of Viburnum originates from the Mediterranean region and thus prefers mild temperatures. In warmer parts of Germany, it can certainly overwinter in a garden bed if placed in a well-protected spot. Frost protection in the form of fleece and fir branches is recommended.

With its compact size of about 2 meters in height and width, the Laurustinus is also ideally suited as a potted plant. This allows it to adorn your balcony or terrace from spring to autumn, and then spend the frosty winter days in a bright, cool location indoors.

The evergreen Laurustinus does not require regular pruning. Reduction cuts or radical pruning to promote flower growth, if necessary, should be done between March and June. Outdoors, it thrives in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil in a sunny to partially shaded location. With good care, it may even delight its admirers with a second bloom in November.
