Mistletoe Sprigs as Decoration

The custom of hanging a mistletoe sprig over the front doorframe during the Christmas season is widespread in the USA and England. If a couple meets beneath it, the tradition dictates "Kissing under the Mistletoe." For each kiss, one of the white berries is plucked. Once there are no more berries on the mistletoe, the kissing stops.

But even here in Germany, mistletoe sprigs are often cut, tied into bouquets with decorative ribbons, and hung on front doors as a good luck charm. So, why mistletoe? It's been considered a mythical plant for a long time. This evergreen plant is very popular due to its healing properties. In modern herbal medicine, extracts from the plant are used, for example, against arthrosis, high blood pressure, rheumatism, tumors, and many other ailments.

Beyond its health benefits, mistletoe (Viscum album) has a very decorative character thanks to its attractive shape and pretty white berries.

Mistletoe sprigs can be used in floral dry arrangements as well as in a vase with cut flowers. In a vase, mistletoe can be combined with, for example, Christmas roses and anemones. However, the branches also look very attractive as a standalone feature in a vase.

Here's a decoration tip: Take several small clear glass bottles or drinking glasses and wrap each individually with a sort of "belly band" made of plaster, white crepe paper, or similar material. Place them next to each other on a tray, fill them with mistletoe sprigs, and then add a few more natural fruits (e.g., nuts, rose hips, acorns, beech nuts, etc.) to the tray.

If you prefer classic entryway decor, a Kissing Ball can be a creative alternative. In addition to mistletoe sprigs, you'll need the following materials:

- A sphere or heart shape made of green floral foam (available at well-stocked plant stores or craft shops)
- Satin ribbon or cord (color of your choice)
- Wire
- Pliers
- And, if desired, branches of evergreen conifers, pinecones, etc.

First, for hanging, push the wire completely through the foam shape and bend a loop at the top with the pliers. At the bottom, a thicker wooden bead, secured with another loop, can prevent the wire from slipping out.

Place the sphere on a glass to prevent it from rolling away while you're adding the branches. Arrange the mistletoe sprigs and any other decorative elements evenly all around the sphere. Before finishing the top, thread the ribbon or cord through the loop. If desired, the hanger can be adorned with a bow.

Attach a hook to the ceiling, hang it up, and you're done!
