The Raised Bed - Relief and Early Harvest

Anyone who works in the garden loves nature, the calming greenery, the beautiful flowers, and perhaps even the fruits and vegetables they can bring straight from the garden or tree into the kitchen.

However, sometimes the enthusiasm of the dedicated gardener can be somewhat dampened. They come inside and complain of back pain. What can be done about that?

There is good news. The solution is raised beds. Once you've harvested or picked flowers from such a back-friendly surface, you'll wonder why you didn't come up with this brilliant idea sooner. Whether it's sowing, nurturing growing plants, or watering, all tasks are greatly eased.

But raised beds have even more advantages. First, there's the battle against the unwanted snails. They can be much more easily controlled at a back-friendly height than on level ground. These plant-eating mollusks have much more difficulty reaching their desired food. Additionally, they can be spotted more easily at eye level, should they manage to get through. Once discovered, they are quickly dealt with. To prevent their return, a snail fence is helpful for raised beds.

And what about growth? Raised beds generate a lot of heat because of the compost effect. They are made from natural materials like topsoil and shredded organic matter. The additional heat development ranges from 1 to 4 °C. Plants love this and immediately use it for growth and ripening. The garden owner can harvest vegetables and herbs much earlier. Even ornamental plants take advantage of this cozy atmosphere to bloom earlier. As organic material decomposes, it also creates a large supply of nutrients for the plants. This is especially beneficial for nutrient-hungry plants like tomatoes and rhubarb.

If you like vegetables and salad, you can plant both in a raised bed. However, you can also turn it into a fragrant herb island, as an alternative to a herb bed or spiral. For those with a sweet tooth, there's the option of combining delicious strawberries with taller-growing currants. Would you rather have a back-friendly ornamental garden where you can admire your favorite plants up close? No problem. The raised bed is perfect for all kinds of stunning perennials. Just stretch out your arm to pick your peony bouquet or daylilies.

The raised bed is not only an incredibly practical solution; when placed correctly, it becomes an eye-catching feature. You can use it as a room divider or as a striking addition right behind the terrace. Whether you build it from wood, stone, or concrete rings is up to the creator. There are as many options as there are styles. There's something for everyone. The romantic might turn it into part of their cozy seating area, surrounded by trellises and rose beds, while the connoisseur integrates it naturally into their vegetable garden. A step further involves designs where multiple raised beds of varying sizes stand side by side, creating a small landscape in the garden. In any case, one thing is certain: the raised bed is a great addition!
