The Queen of Houseplants – Orchids in General

The diverse orchid is considered one of the most popular houseplants. Its exotic flowers bring joy even in the cooler months and now adorn countless windows both inside and out.

While most laypeople can distinguish the plants only by their flower type and color, there are actually around 30,000 species known to botanists. With a few exceptions, the flowers are typically arranged in racemose inflorescences. The individual flower of an orchid varies greatly in color and shape. While some flowers are very small and would appear rather inconspicuous on their own, others can grow up to 20 centimeters in size. Some are multicolored, while others are of simple elegance.

Orchids can be found almost everywhere in the wild. However, most of them are located in tropical regions, particularly in South America and Asia. In our region, they are subject to various conservation regulations. A few orchids are even known as useful plants. In Turkey, the use of their tubers to flavor food is well known. As ornamental plants and cut flowers, orchids have a long tradition. Around 100,000 different hybrids have been created, some of which are commercially cultivated and sold as ornamental plants.

Orchids are also particularly popular as hair accessories. On special occasions like weddings, the use of fresh blooms is always appreciated. Unlike many other flowers that can barely survive a day without water, orchid blooms stand out due to their long-lasting durability. Both hairdressers and florists can offer helpful advice and assistance in incorporating orchids into these arrangements.
