A bed full of daffodils – planting Easter lilies

When the last summer flowers start to fade, it's time to plan for the new gardening season. Daffodils must not be missed next spring.

Daffodils thrive in flower beds, pots, and balcony boxes. When planted in the fall before the first frost, they will bloom vibrantly between March and May. In the right location, you can expect a true sea of colors.

Daffodils in the Fall: Planting Tips

Daffodil bulbs are planted in the fall, with September being the best time. However, as long as no frost is expected, you can plant the bulbs until the beginning of winter, even in October. When purchasing, be sure to check the condition of the bulbs. If there are soft spots or they look shriveled, it's better to avoid buying them. Also, refrain from purchasing if the packaging conceals the contents, as this prevents you from inspecting the condition. However, if the bulbs are plump and healthy, there's no reason not to plant them. It's best to do so soon. Plant the daffodils individually, with a spacing of about 10 centimeters between each bulb. Planting small groups is also an option, as this showcases the lovely spring messengers even more beautifully.

Planting Bulbs – What to Keep in Mind

Daffodil bulbs should be planted about 10 centimeters deep, unless they are particularly large or small. In that case, follow the rule of thumb to plant them about twice as deep as their height. If you have enough garden space, you can plant additional daffodils to later use as cut flowers for a vase. These colorful flowers will last for a while in water and bring the spring feeling into your home.

The soil for daffodils should be nutrient-rich and well-draining. While daffodils are less sensitive to moisture than other bulb flowers, they are still at risk of rot during their dormant phase. To prevent this, loosen the soil before planting. Add a layer of sand for drainage at the bottom of the planting holes. If planting in a pot or balcony box, use expanded clay as the drainage layer. Place the bulb on top of this layer with the pointed end facing up.

Daffodils in the Flower Bed

Daffodils combine beautifully with other spring bloomers like tulips and winter aconites. This creates a spring garden bed filled with a burst of color! Daffodils usually bloom in vibrant yellow shades, bringing the sunshine to your flowerbed. However, you can also use other color combinations with white or purple tones for your garden design.

Once the daffodils begin to fade in April or May, avoid cutting the foliage right away. Only remove it once it can be gently pulled away to avoid damaging the plant.
