Zwiebellaub braucht eine professionelle Behandlung!

As beautiful as spring plants are in the full vigor of their bloom, just as unsightly is the bulb foliage they produce in their final phase.

Bulb foliage isn't pretty. No wonder many want to remove it quickly. How do you deal with it without harming the plant?

What to Do with Bulb Foliage?

The gardener's joy is great when, after the cold season, colorful activity returns to the garden, thanks to the blossoms of industrious spring bloomers. But these beautiful companions also face an end. Before the summer plants take over, tulips and co. exchange their appealing appearance for wilting parts. Now the question arises of how to deal with the bulb foliage. The blossoms that sadly hang their heads can be rigorously cut off; their purpose is fulfilled. But inside the plant, a lot is still going on. The plant lets its owner know this. One only has to look at the bulb foliage.

What Does the Plant Want?

After flowering, the plant withdraws all its energy inwards. This little bundle of energy slowly lets its stems and foliage wilt away. The hobby gardener can observe this process, as the development of unsightly bulb foliage happens quite slowly. What was once beautifully curved green turns into limp parts in dull colors, which eventually fall off the bulb without much external intervention. This is botanical language and means: you can now cut off the bulb foliage.

Into Summer Vacation Without Bulb Foliage

With a well-sharpened tool, the gardener gets to work. They cut the bulb foliage close to the ground. If you do it beforehand, you strain the energy reserves for the new blooming season. The bulb has only now reached the stage where it wants to quietly replenish its energy tank. Anyone who grants their flower bulbs a restful sleep cure now moves them to their summer quarters. If there are still remnants of bulb foliage, remove them beforehand. In autumn, they will return to the earth and provide fresh life next year.
