Weigela – Wonder of Blooms and Feast for the Eyes

Lush Flowering Shrubs for Beautiful Gardens

Especially if you're designing a large garden, you'll be happy to find a beautifully growing, undemanding, and abundantly flowering shrub that can serve multiple purposes. Weigela can act as a privacy screen or a hedge, but also as an eye-catching focal point, drawing attention to a special area of your garden, such as a flower bed, a seating area, a pond, or a path.

For a fragrant and flowering hedge, you can combine Weigela with plants like dogwood, mock orange, wild roses, or lilac.

From May onwards, Weigela reward their admirers with particularly graceful, funnel-shaped blossoms that shine in white (e.g., Weigela 'Nana Variegata'), rosé (e.g., Weigela florida), pink (e.g., 'Bristol Ruby'), red (e.g., 'Red Prince'), or even yellow (e.g., Weigela middendorfiana). These shrubs can reach up to three meters in height and a similar diameter, making them especially suitable for planting as solitary shrubs.

If you prefer something more delicate, you can opt for dwarf varieties that grow less than a meter tall and can also be kept in pots and containers. Granting your Weigela a sunny spot will encourage them to produce an abundance of blooms.

Planting and Caring

If you're looking for a suitable spot for your Weigela in fall or early spring, ensure the shrub can develop evenly. This means the Weigela needs consistent sunlight and, if planted alone, enough distance from neighboring plants.

You can improve very nutrient-poor soil by adding compost, then mulching with bark. This keeps the soil loose and light and prevents it from drying out.

Weigela are very robust and low-maintenance. Beyond fertilizing in spring and pruning right after flowering, you'll have little work with them. If you notice an older plant becoming unsightly, you can cut it back to about 30cm. The plant will recover quickly and delight you with blooms again starting from the second year.
