Four-Leaf Clover – The Luck That Comes From a Plant

A tiny piece of nature, yet it holds something mysterious. The four-leaf clover is said to have existed since the very first humans, Adam and Eve. A legend surrounds this botanical rarity: Eve supposedly didn't want to be expelled from Paradise without a souvenir and simply took the little good luck charm with her. Because of this, the rare leaf has been imbued with a touch of the Garden of Eden for hundreds of years, making it highly coveted and sought after.

Anyone who finds one considers themselves lucky. The Celts diligently searched for it because it was an important ingredient for their famous magic potions. Typically, the Druids held the privilege of using this lucky leaf for magical purposes.

The fascination with these rare finds is so great that it has even earned an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. One Alaskan resident holds the record with over 110,000 dried specimens. But it's not just about an extra leaf; there are even clovers with five, six, or more leaves. Another world record is held by a Japanese individual who reportedly found a variant with an astonishing 56 individual leaves.

Research hasn't fully explored the cause of this rare phenomenon. Currently, a genetic mutation is suspected, but environmental factors are also being considered.

Luck isn't just something we like to have ourselves; it's also fun to give away. A lovely New Year's Eve tradition involves bringing lucky clover. However, this is a different plant altogether: it's a type of wood sorrel (Oxalis), originally from Mexico, which naturally comes with four leaves as standard. But that doesn't detract from its good intentions!

There's a whole arsenal of varieties available, offering a good selection of differently colored foliage. This charming harbinger of luck can grow up to 40 centimeters tall and feels just as comfortable on a balcony or terrace. So, there's no reason to carelessly toss it in the trash once it's served its purpose as a gift. You can even plant it in your garden once the frost period is over.
