Portuguese Laurel Cherry – The Evergreen All-Rounder

The Portuguese Laurel Cherry is a widely popular hedging plant in gardens. It provides decorative privacy, wind, and noise protection.

The Portuguese Laurel Cherry brings a very special Mediterranean flair to the garden. Unlike common laurel cherry, the Portuguese Laurel Cherry is a distinct eye-catcher.

Special Genes – Special Beauty

The Portuguese Laurel Cherry's striking appearance is largely due to its distinguished family lineage. This perennial hedging plant belongs to none other than the rose family (Rosaceae). And it certainly lives up to its family's reputation: the Portuguese Laurel Cherry captivates with its beautiful flower clusters, which hang from its shoots in early summer, creating a wonderful contrast to its evergreen leaves.

Mediterranean Flair for Your Garden

The Portuguese Laurel Cherry brings an undeniable Mediterranean flair to the garden. Unlike common laurel varieties, this hedging plant features delicate, smaller evergreen leaves that more closely resemble true laurel, giving the plant a distinctive appearance.

The Portuguese Laurel Cherry originally hails from the Canary Islands, the Azores, mainland Spain, and Southern France. Its origin is reflected in its appearance, and even though this particular laurel is accustomed to hotter climates, it thrives beautifully in our gardens too.

The All-Rounder in the Garden

The Portuguese Laurel Cherry is incredibly popular as a hedging plant in our region. It's no wonder, as this plant forms an attractive visual, wind, and noise barrier. This is primarily due to the evergreen and compact growth habit of the hedging plant.

However, this Mediterranean plant is also very popular as an ornamental shrub. If you don't want to go without the look of laurel in winter, you can even keep the Portuguese Laurel Cherry in a pot on the terrace as a laurel substitute. This way, the hardy shrub provides a touch of Mediterranean flair even during the colder months.
