The Water Garden – Harmony and Movement at the Same Time

Few gardening topics are as diverse as that of the water garden. Even in the smallest spaces, such as on a terrace in a container, one can create a miniature water landscape and enjoy the magic of the wet element.

The right mix creates harmony

In Asian cultures, where the water garden has a long tradition, balancing the two energy principles of Yin and Yang plays a very important role. These two principles represent the design elements of flowing and still water in the water garden. Thus, streams and cascades contrast with the usually fish-filled pond.

Even in the fish pond, these two elements play a significant role. The still water contrasts with the agile fish. And it is this contrast, which should be seen more as a complementary relationship, that fosters both our inner and outer harmony, according to Daoist philosophy.

Play with heights and depths

If you're planning to create a stream or waterfall in your garden, it's best to choose the highest point of the property. If you like, you can emphasize this by raising it even more. However, be cautious—if the sound of running water bothers you, it’s better not to let the cascade fall too deeply.

A pond should ideally be placed in the lowest area of your property, as it will appear most natural and peaceful there. If your garden is very small, plan the pond relatively close to the house. The key is to leave enough space around the pond for easy access. This not only makes pond maintenance easier but also allows you to discover and enjoy the most beautiful viewpoints.

Shade enlivens your water

Especially in gardens where a pond cannot be deeper than 1.20 meters, it's advisable to protect the water surface from excessive summer sunlight. Therefore, it's recommended to plant a tree in a way that provides shade on the water, particularly during the strong afternoon sun. You should just ensure that the tree doesn't drop its leaves into the pond in the fall, as falling leaves can be a significant health issue for small bodies of water.

By the way, a stream or waterfall looks especially picturesque when it winds through lush vegetation and is shaded by a majestic tree.

The luxury version of a water garden – the swimming pond

If you have enough space on your property and a generous budget, consider installing a swimming pond in your garden. Not only do these ponds provide enjoyment for their owners during summer swims, but they can be enjoyed year-round.

You can plant the banks of your pond with marsh or sedge grasses, irises, cowbane, and cotton grass. If you're planning a marsh zone, horsetail, reed, and native bulrushes are popular choices. However, please be aware that these species spread quickly, so be thoughtful when planting them. And don’t forget to add some fish, especially in standing water, as they will help control mosquito larvae.
