Anyone looking to create a cottage-style garden should not overlook the Sweet William. The plant, with its countless flower shapes and colors, is an absolute must in the cottage garden.

The Sweet William belongs to the carnation family, originating from East Asia and Eastern Europe. There, they grow as wild plants, primarily in lower regions. However, it is also occasionally found in higher altitudes. The carnation family thrives well on rocky slopes as well. From East Asia and Eastern Europe, the Sweet William found its way into home gardens. Since then, it has become a staple in our gardens.

The Sweet William is a must-have for any cottage garden. The plant blooms from May to September in white, pink, red, or bi-colored combinations. The flowers can be either simple or double, and they impress with their exceptionally long lifespan. The eye of the flower is usually easily recognizable at first glance due to a contrasting color. However, the Sweet William is a bit shy when it comes to sowing: it only shows its colorful bloom in the year following sowing and planting.

The Sweet William loves the sun. For the plant to develop optimally and produce beautiful blooms in the garden, it needs a full sun location. While many other plants prefer a partially shaded spot, this is too dark and lacking in sunlight for the Sweet William. In a partially shaded location, the Sweet William hardly grows and produces very few flowers. A lack of sunlight would also have further consequences for the plant in the garden: without sunlight, the plant cannot develop resistance and would therefore be more susceptible to pests and diseases.
