Carex – more than just simple grasses

Grasses in the garden always create a special atmosphere. Carex is incredibly adaptable, and there is the right variety for almost every location.

Those who plant Carex in their garden can look forward to lasting color in the bed. The evergreen and winter-hardy grasses provide a play of color even on gray days.

Many species – many locations

Carex are ornamental grasses that couldn’t be more diverse. The genus now includes over 2,000 species and belongs to the family of sedges. The different species naturally grow in moist forest and meadow soils, but they also thrive in bogs and along marshy water edges. Some species are also found in drier locations: these can even be sandy and stony. Carex are especially widespread in North America and East Asia.

Grasses are not just grasses

At first glance, grasses in the garden can easily be distinguished from ornamental shrubs or perennials. However, grasses can be difficult to differentiate from one another for the untrained eye. Carex, on the other hand, are different. These grasses have very special leaves: not only do the leaves of Carex have a triangular cross-section, but they are also filled with a pith. When looking at the leaves of Carex in cross-section, it becomes apparent that the leaf blades are not flat but slightly folded.

Robust but delicate grasses

Carex are very hardy grasses that require little care. Most Carex species prefer a fresh, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. However, if these conditions aren't met, the grasses are very adaptable and will make do with what they get. Isn't that great? When looking for Carex in stores, you’ll be spoiled for choice. There are grasses for wet or dry soils and for sunny or shady locations.
