The Well-Maintained Lawn

**The Pride of Any Garden**

It can certainly be said that there is hardly another element in the garden that makes the owner as proud as a lush, green, even, and vibrant lawn. Although it requires quite a bit of effort, the work is definitely worth it. The foundation of a beautiful lawn begins with selecting the right seed.

The intended use and location of the lawn will determine which variety you should choose. Will the lawn be walked on frequently? Are larger areas of the lawn in the shade? There are specific types of grass for these different purposes.

**Good Preparation is Half the Battle**

Especially when establishing a new lawn, it’s essential to prepare the ground thoroughly. This will save you a lot of work later and provide your new lawn with optimal growing conditions from the start. It is often worth completely redoing a lawn area that is not thriving, constantly mossy, or has more weeds than grass. To do this, lift the sod and remove any stones, roots, and weeds from the area.

If the ground is uneven, fill it with soil and ensure the soil is loosened to a depth of about 10-15 cm. This can be done with a so-called "Sauzahn" (a type of soil loosening tool).

Carefully check the soil quality. Water should not collect anywhere; if it does, add sand to the soil in those areas to improve drainage. Rake the soil several times from all sides and then compact it with a lawn roller to ensure it is uniformly firm, free from clumps, and not prone to settling unevenly. If the soil is depleted, you can fertilize it again to give the new lawn the strength it needs.

**The Right Cut at the Right Time**

When the first grass shoots appear after about 2-3 weeks, you can manually pull out any weeds that have grown. Once your lawn reaches a length of about 6-8 cm, make the first cut, followed by the next one two weeks later. Make sure the lawn is never cut shorter than 4 cm and keep it free of leaves in the autumn. With a fertilizer application in the spring and another one in mid-summer, your lawn will have the necessary nutrients to grow back strong and healthy.
