Keeping a Cool Head with a Sun Sail

We love summer and the sun, but a Sunday coffee gathering or a summer party can quickly turn into a sweaty affair without any shade.

To quickly and conveniently immerse your patio, seating area, and even your children's play equipment in cooling shade, simply install a sun sail.

Modern sailcloths and awning fabrics are available in many colors and designs and can usually be set up in just a few steps. This not only eliminates the annoying stand of a garden umbrella, but these popular sun sails, with their versatility in shape and type, have also become fantastic design elements in the garden.

Among DIY enthusiasts, a real competition seems to have broken out to create the most creative designs for airy shade providers. There are models inspired by the fans of elegant ladies in Spanish courts, as well as tent-like structures that protect not only from the sun but also from the wind, bringing a tropical beach vibe to the garden.

What all these designs have in common is that the chosen fabric is fastened and tensioned to the house, pavilion, balcony, or ground using poles, ropes, and hooks, similar to pitching a tent. And just like a tent, the entire construction can be quickly, easily, and, most importantly, compactly stored when not in use.

The simplest, improvised models can consist of a plastic tarp tensioned with pegs and cord. Of course, such a construction won't last too long, but for a nice picnic or a summer party in the garden, it's a perfectly practical and quick solution – and in the evening, fairy lights and other decorations will set the right mood. Even a sudden summer thunderstorm won't put a damper on your fun with such a tarp.

To remain beautiful and, most importantly, undamaged for a long time, your sun sail should have proper reinforcement along its edges, incorporating metal eyelets. For instance, on your patio by the house, you can securely anchor hooks into the wall to attach the sun sail. To ensure rainwater drains quickly, the fabric should be tensioned with a significant slope. Use strong rubber expanders for tensioning; this will make the construction more durable when strong gusts of wind arise, as less pulling force will be transferred to your sun sail.
