Herbs in the Garden

Many people with their own garden want to grow herbs for personal use. It's actually not that difficult to maintain a personal supply of various herbs in the garden, as most herbs are easy to care for. However, there are a few things to consider if you want herbs to grow and thrive in your garden.

How Do Herbs Grow Best in the Garden?

Most types of herbs need direct sunlight to grow optimally. Generally, we distinguish between annual, biennial, and perennial herb plants. Herbs require different amounts of water. For example, chives need significantly more water than lemon balm.

The space for herbs in your own garden doesn't need to be very large; up to 5 square meters is perfectly sufficient. Herbs are best planted directly near the house. This way, you can always spontaneously and easily harvest the herbs you need while cooking. Herbs also love a fairly sheltered spot from the wind. Since most herb varieties love sun, a wind-protected, sunny location is best for their growth.

Herbs for Personal Use

Very popular annual herbs include marjoram, chervil, and dill. Among the biennial and perennial plants are parsley, lovage, rosemary, thyme, and mint.

Annual herbs are usually planted in mid-May, after the "Ice Saints" (the last traditional spring frosts). These are available as seeds from specialty stores. For optimal germination in the first few days, it's recommended to cover the soil with garden fleece.

Biennial and perennial herb plants are usually planted in September, either in spring or autumn, or sown as seeds in September.

Herbs love compost fertilization. Treatment with chemical fertilizers, however, is not desirable, as it often negatively impacts the flavor of the herbs. The soil surface should always be kept loose with a small garden rake. Herbs need water, and with a crusted surface, it's difficult for enough water to reach the root ball.

Proper Care Leads to the Best Growth

Only properly treated herbs taste good and thrive magnificently. Herbs should be watered in the summer months either in the morning or towards evening, when the sun's radiation is no longer as intense. Otherwise, there is a risk that the water will create a burning effect on the leaves.

If you don't have your own garden, herbs can also be easily planted on the windowsill or balcony. Herbs are quite undemanding, but they rarely forgive not being watered. Regular care is therefore very important. The herbs will thank you with magnificent growth and excellent taste. Your own herbs have a much more intense flavor than dried or store-bought herbs. Herbs from your own garden are simply fresher and more intense in taste. This becomes noticeable when cooking or preparing salads.
