Fire Pits, Fire Bowls, and Co.

A Fascinating Element

"Few elements captivate us as much as fire. It not only warms us physically but also warms our souls with the dance of its flames, bringing friends together in its pleasant glow. It's no wonder that many gardens are experiencing a true renaissance of fire these days.

Whether built into the ground or placed in a stone table, a fire pit invites us to gather around, warm ourselves, and roast seasonal treats in its embers. The equipment you choose determines the additional functions you wish to add to your fire pit.

For example, a spark guard can protect both big and small fire enthusiasts, which is especially recommended when using wood that is rich in resin and oil. Generally, when using a fire pit or fire bowl, the heat value of the wood is not the main concern, allowing for a wider variety of firewood choices. Particularly pine, spruce, and olive wood, which may be available from your own garden, are known to cause more spark formation. So, caution is advised."

Classic Models

"Fire pits, like those we know from campgrounds, are essentially built based on a pattern: a circular area where wood and embers are placed, protected from the wind by a circular border. Above this, a sturdy tripod is often set up, from which a pot or a grill grate can hang. This ensures that the heat from the fire is not wasted, but can be used for cooking, roasting, and grilling.

Modern fire pits generally follow this basic principle, although the design of commercially available devices is usually much more complex and, above all, decorative. Materials such as stainless steel, cast iron, wrought iron, and glass are commonly used, allowing for a wide range of design possibilities."

Modern Alternatives

"Some garden owners like to build their own fire pit by creating an inset area in their garden, paving it, with the actual fire pit located in the center. For convenience, the entire round is dug about 45-50 cm deep, so that the edge of the construction can serve as a seating area for guests.

Since many fire pits and fire baskets are primarily used as a heat source and atmospheric nighttime lighting in the garden, their design is given particular attention."
