A Birdhouse Made from a Canning Jar – A Glass Feeding Stop for Birds

As cities become more densely built, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for our native birds to find enough food. That’s why it’s especially important to support these little birds so they don’t go hungry.

Buying a birdhouse is one way to provide an additional food source. But a birdhouse can also be easily made at home. It’s not only more budget-friendly, it’s also a lot of fun and makes for a great family afternoon project.

The Right Materials

The materials needed for the birdhouse made from a mason jar can usually be found in any household. First, you’ll need a mason jar. You’ll also need double-sided tape, various sticks, parcel string, wildflowers, and birdseed.

To ensure the birds stay healthy and safe, the mason jar must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected beforehand. After cleaning, it should also be completely dried. This prevents bacteria from spreading inside the jar. Moisture in the jar could cause the birdseed to mold, which would be harmful to the little birds.

So remember: clean thoroughly and dry well.

Building a House for Small Birds

Once the mason jar is properly prepared, it’s time to use the parcel string. Tie the string securely around both ends of the jar. Leave the ends long—this is how the birdhouse will be hung later. On the side with the opening, the string can be tucked inside the jar for now to prevent it from sticking to the glass.

Next, wrap the entire jar with double-sided tape. Be careful not to get any dirt on the tape, so that the sticks will adhere well. Once the protective layer is removed from the tape, break the sticks to the size of the jar and press them onto the tape. This should be done all the way around the jar.

Then, take another piece of parcel string and wrap it as tightly as possible around the jar and the sticks, tying it securely in place.

Creative Design for a Cozy Atmosphere

To make the birdhouse more than just a jar with sticks, it can now be beautifully decorated. Seasonal wildflowers are especially suitable for this. In summer, lavender gives off a lovely fragrance and looks very decorative as well. Grasses also look great on the birdhouse. The more natural the decoration looks, the more comfortable the birds will feel. Grasses blend perfectly into the garden landscape and can easily be stuck into the gaps between the sticks with their thin stems. However, to ensure that the birds can easily get in and out of the birdhouse, the entrance should not be covered by grasses or flowers. Once the birdhouse is decorated, it can be hung on the tree using the long ends of the packing tape and filled with plenty of bird food.
