Strelitzias – Bring the Tropics to Your Garden

Even though exotic strelitzias are primarily known as houseplants in Germany, it is entirely possible to keep them in pots or containers in the garden during frost-free periods. Strelitzias, especially popularized by the magnificent Strelitzia reginae or bird-of-paradise flower, have transformed from long-blooming vacation souvenirs into the pride of many hobby gardeners.

Strelitzias are large, herbaceous plants that form rhizomes, with the help of which they can be propagated easily and quickly. However, propagation by seeds, though longer, is also possible. Under optimal conditions, strelitzias can grow to a height of 1.5 to 3 meters.

The large leaves suffer in strong winds and can tear unattractively. In general, it is advisable to place strelitzias in a sheltered location, as the leaves and flowers have long stems and are heavy at the top, making the entire plant top-heavy and prone to tipping over along with its container.

The leaves of strelitzias are quite significant, as they cause the plants to transpire a relatively large amount of water. This means they have a high water requirement, especially in great heat and strong sun. Nevertheless, you should avoid waterlogging, especially in winter.

Furthermore, it's important that strelitzias are not subjected to extreme changes in location. They need to gradually adapt to different conditions. Especially when moving them from the house to the garden, ensure the plant is not suddenly exposed to intense midday sun.

In our latitudes, you can also find seeds and plants of the imposing, white-flowering Strelitzia alba, as well as S. caudata with cream-colored blooms and 'Mandela's Gold' with yellow-golden flowers. Each possesses its own charm, but all are beautiful.

When the pot or container for your plant becomes too small, meaning the first roots start growing out the bottom, you can repot it.

For the substrate, we recommend a mixture of three-quarters regular garden soil mixed with sand to make it more permeable and lighter. Fertilize with a weak solution approximately every four weeks.

The plants should overwinter at temperatures of about 10° C and free from drafts. Place them in the brightest possible location.
