Low-Maintenance Garden: An Oasis of Well-being Despite Little Time

Think little garden work means a less beautiful result? That's a common misconception. With a realistic approach and clever design, you can achieve a small paradise with surprisingly little effort.

First and foremost, you should accept the existing conditions as given. A garden designed primarily for relaxation and less for work will, by this basic approach alone, develop a close-to-nature feel and require less maintenance. If you have a damp patch of meadow, use it for bog plants and, ideally, for a pond. Plants that find their proper home in the right spot require little work. Don't worry, there are suitable botanical inhabitants for every garden area!

Want to figure out where the mildest climate is for more sensitive plants? Observe where the snow melts first! Where does the wind typically blow from? That's where you'd plant a hedge of wild shrubs, as they'll hold back stormy air masses, and the clever gardener will save themselves a lot of watering.

Such a hedge is also suitable for bordering a large garden, as is a hedge of flowering shrubs that grow a few meters high. These green privacy screens require only minimal pruning; simply removing bothersome branches is enough.

Wonderful options include fragrant lilac, the abundantly flowering weigela and deutzia, the idyllic viburnum, and berry-producing plants like sea buckthorn and rowan. Where a secluded seating area is desired, wild roses or elderberry are also excellent choices. Songbirds and colorful butterflies won't be long in coming, completing your garden's charm.

Always consider incorporating a water feature, as they require minimal maintenance. Once you've created a pond, it remains as it is for years, generating a natural, refreshing, and simultaneously calming atmosphere. On a smaller scale, even a fountain can be very effective.

Do you have stones in your garden? Perhaps they could become part of a dry stone wall or a rock pile. Animal residents like lizards and beetles will thank you for it. As an added bonus, they also help in eliminating many pests.

Don't feel like spending hours creating an artificial-looking, uniform, and almost sterile lawn? Great, because a cheerful, colorful flower meadow is perfectly compatible with minimal effort! Sowing the seeds is simple. A flowering lawn is another option, especially as a transition area. It won won't take long for daffodils, daisies, primroses, violets, snowdrops, Siberian squill, and perhaps even the charming cuckooflower to share the space.

Of course, even a low-maintenance garden isn't complete without perennials, as they bring life to your beds. For minimal effort, opt for a few selected varieties and plant at least three of each. Consider different heights and choose good color combinations, and summer can arrive, even for the hobby gardener with limited free time.

Hardy plants are key! Foremost among them are Lady's Mantle (Frauenmantel) and Spurge (Wolfsmilch).

Start with all types of herbs. The principle is simple: plant, pick, and prepare! Continue with tasty contributions like raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. If you can invest a bit more time, you can even expand to vegetable plants. Zucchini, beans, and radishes are a great start.

Here's one last tip from days gone by: in every garden, there used to be a house tree. It stood at the center, provided shade, was beautiful to look at, and required absolutely no work. It's tough to find a counter-argument to that!
