The grave in summer – finding the right flowers

Especially for summer, there are a few "classics" that were often planted on graves in the past. But other flowers are also a good and stylish choice in summer.

In the past, certain plants were assigned specific symbolism. White lilies, for example, are still considered the typical grave flowers today. So, those who value symbolism would not gift white lilies for a birth. White chrysanthemums and white carnations were also once regarded as traditional flowers for the dead. Gerberas and callas are now often used to decorate graves and were already classic grave flowers in the past. In spring, pansies and violets top the list of plants for graves. When designing a grave, it depends on whether one values traditions and symbolism, or if simply planting what is liked is preferred.

Actually, there’s no right or wrong when it comes to choosing flowers for the grave. What is planted can be what personally appeals to you or what the deceased loved. For those with little time for grave care or who live far away, ground cover plants are a good option. They help prevent the grave from drying out and looking unattractive, especially during prolonged summer heat. Ground covers grow slowly and can go for several days without fresh water. In the summer, any seasonal flowers can be added. What matters is that the plants don't have too many demands. The soil on the grave is not always nutrient-rich, so plants like sedum, mullein, yarrow, or spurge are ideal. They handle dry and sandy soils well.

It is important to plant the grave before the heatwave hits. Only then will the plants have enough time to root deeply and become resistant to the ongoing heat. Generally, regular watering and fertilizing are necessary during the summer to ensure that the flowers grow beautifully and healthily. A grave should never be a burden for the loved ones but rather an opportunity to feel close to the deceased and to think of them. Therefore, one should opt for low-maintenance grave planting that doesn’t require much work. Perennial plants reduce the planting efforts, and ground covers help prevent weeds. Flowering plants then give the grave a seasonal touch.
