The stream in the garden – water brings calm and relaxation.

Water always has a calming effect. Flowing water in the garden makes the green oasis even more relaxing than it already is. And the best part: a stream is easier to create than you might think.

If you're looking for an extra dose of relaxation, you should consider adding a stream. The flowing water relaxes both body and mind and offers the opportunity to create entire landscapes around it.

Flowing water brings relaxation

Few other sounds are as calming as flowing water. It has a positive effect on the entire nervous system, helping the body to relax. No wonder that a stream in the garden is so popular. And this is not a trend that will disappear in a few years; flowing water in a stream will likely continue to soothe the body and mind for the next 100 years. How convenient that setting up a stream in the garden is relatively simple and affordable. While having a slope in the garden is an advantage, it's not necessary to create a stream.

The stream in the garden

If you have a slope in your garden, you have the ideal conditions for a stream. But even in a flat garden, the necessary slope for a stream can be created artificially. In any case, the water must come from a specific source and be collected somewhere. A spring stone is a great starting point for the stream. The stream itself can then flow into a small garden pond, which works well at the foot of a terrace. With proper planting, the stream blends beautifully into the garden. The key components for the stream are the right pump technology, pond liner or plastic basin, and decoration and planting. When choosing materials, it all comes down to personal taste.

Botanical residents in and around the stream

Plants are essential for the stream, so that it doesn’t look out of place in the garden. Therefore, specific planting zones and bank areas should be planned where the plants can thrive. It's important that the plants in the stream aren't washed away, and that the soil they need to survive doesn’t disappear with the flowing water. In the streambed, bog plants like dwarf rush and fool’s flower feel right at home. At the edges of the stream, plants like lady’s mantle, cranesbill, spirea, and moneywort are perfect, also helping to cover any exposed pond liner.
