Facade Greening

Beauty and Benefits

Anyone who wants to actively contribute to making their city greener should consider whether they can green one or more walls or facades of their house. This will not only beautify your living space but, if properly planned, can even make a supportive contribution to improving the living climate.

South and West Facades Especially Interesting

South-facing facades, for example, can be beautifully greened with deciduous species like roses, ivy, honeysuckle, or wisteria. The dense foliage that develops will protect the wall from overheating in summer. In winter, however, the sun can actively contribute to warming the building.

Since in Central Europe, the west side of a house is particularly exposed to weather conditions like wind and rain, it makes sense to protect the house on the west facade with ivy, clematis, climbing hydrangeas, and woodbine.

Is Your Greening Measure Eligible for Funding?

In some municipalities, homeowners even receive subsidies if they green their house facade, so it is definitely worth checking with the relevant authorities in advance. The building department will inform you about which greening measures are considered eligible for funding and what kind of support you can expect.

Your personal preference, as well as the condition of the facade, will primarily determine which plant species you should choose. For example, ivy and wild vine, with their adhesive organs, can grow freely along the facade and only need support when they become older and heavier. However, it is crucial that the facade is completely intact and stable. Over the years, a significant amount of plant material can accumulate, and the adhesive organs can grow into existing cracks and crevices.

Trellises That Deliver on Their Promise

For climbing, trailing, and twining plants such as hops, clematis, wisteria, and pipevine, a supporting structure is used to help the plants grow along the masonry. These trellises allow the plants to be kept at a distance from the wall and can even be combined with insulation measures. This can help improve the energy efficiency of your home. It is best to consult with a competent expert for advice on this.

In any case, it is important that the trellises and their anchors are capable of safely bearing the loads that the plants will create over the years. Additionally, homeowners who want to prevent flying and crawling residents of their facade greening from entering the house while ventilating should equip the windows with fly screens.
