How do I care for houseplants during a short vacation?

Even those who enjoy going on vacation frequently usually don't want to do without houseplants. But if you don't have family or friends available to water them, you'll need to come up with a solution to ensure your plants survive your absence.

Gone for a Short While

"If you're only away for a short time, it's enough to thoroughly soak your plants before departure. Especially pots with larger root balls will then be supplied for a few days. It's also helpful if the plants are not in too warm or too bright a spot. Although potted plants don't like changes in location, it causes less harm than letting them dry out.

If you're unsure how well this method works, you can test it a few weeks beforehand to see how long the plant lasts this way. In summer, the time is naturally shorter than in winter, but it always depends on the size of the plants and the specific varieties."

Slightly Longer Vacation Trips

"If you find during the test that the root ball is completely dried out before the target time is over, you can extend this a little. For example, a higher water storage capacity is given if the volume of the substrate is increased. That means: repotting. However, not just two days before departure, but at least a week beforehand.

Furthermore, you can take advantage of the fact that the plant consumes less water in cool and dark locations. High humidity also helps. But of course, sun-loving plants should not be put into a completely dark cellar. Here, a good sense for moderation is required."

Plants get additional water with this trick, which, however, only works if the plant is in a clay pot. This is because the porous material allows water to pass through. So, you place it in a larger container and fill the space in between with absorbent material that you have pre-watered. Clay pebbles from the garden center, for example, are well suited for this. This material then releases moisture through the clay pot to the plant's root ball.

For longer absences, however, none of these methods will likely be sufficient. Other tricks must help. Of course, it's best if neighbors or friends check in and, with expertise, take care of the blooms in your home.
