Spring treatment for the lawn – finally breathing again

"When the last snow has melted and the temperatures begin to rise, you can almost feel how nature takes a deep breath and frees itself from the weight of winter. Spring has finally arrived.

Not only the plants in the garden are enjoying the fresh air and the warming sun – the lawn is also finally recovering from the heavy snow cover and freezing cold. But in order to breathe again, it needs a little help."

Preparation is half the battle

To prevent the worst, preparations can be made in the fall to ensure the lawn isn't too badly affected during the winter and recovers better in the spring. There are special fertilizers for the fall that make the lawn more resistant to drought, fungal infections, and frost. Additionally, applying iron helps the lawn sprout a rich green from the start in the spring and, in the process, reduces moss growth. However, even the best preparation can't protect the lawn from damage. Ice and snow cause trouble for the lawn in winter, which is why it needs a bit of revitalization in the spring.

Finally breathing again

To help the lawn recover well in the spring, it should be cleared of last year’s remnants as soon as possible. Old leaves and other organic debris have turned into a thatch over the winter, which deprives the lawn of the air it needs to breathe. These remnants should be removed as quickly as possible in the spring. A good way to do this is by scarifying. The best time to scarify is once the grass begins to grow in March and April. Afterward, the roots of the grass will receive plenty of air and light, allowing the lawn to grow back healthily. Don’t forget to fertilize after scarifying! This is exactly what the weakened lawn needs the most right now.

Avoiding care mistakes

Once the snow has melted and the lawn has been scarified, it will benefit from fertilizer. Special spring fertilizers provide the depleted lawn with everything it needs after winter. Fertilizing should be done on a cloudy day, and if it doesn’t rain afterward, the lawn should be thoroughly watered. In regions where snow remains until late March, the spring treatment must be postponed. As long as it's still freezing, the lawn is protected from drying out under the snow cover. The sun would cause the water in exposed grass blades to evaporate. In spring, this isn’t a problem, but from frozen soil, the lawn can’t get any water and will dry out. Therefore, never remove the snow cover too early. Nature knows when the time is right.
