The Atlantic ivy (Hedera helix) is a climbing, creeping, evergreen plant with decorative, blue fruits. It produces greenish-yellow flowers arranged in umbels from September to October. The Atlantic ivy also has heart-shaped, dark green leaves. In a semi-shady to shady location with humusy, calcareous, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of around 10 metres and grows to around 1.4 metres wide.

Growth

Atlantic ivy is a creeping climbing plant that can reach a height of 4 - 10 metres and a width of 0.8 - 1.4 metres. It usually grows 1 - 1.5 m per year.

The evergreen leaves of the Atlantic ivy are dark green, heart-shaped, alternate, lobed. They are about 5 - 12 cm in size.

Flower

The greenish-yellow flowers of the Atlantic ivy appear in umbels from September to October.

Fruit

The blue fruits of Hedera helix ssp. hibernica are particularly decorative. These appear from March.

Root

Hedera helix ssp. hibernica is a heartroot and, depending on the soil, forms densely branched roots.

Location

Preferred location in semi-shady to shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Atlantic ivy has good frost hardiness.

Water regularly and allow the soil to dry out in the meantime.

Care

Ivy as an adhesive rootstock is particularly suitable for greening house walls. A wooden structure should be chosen for stabilisation.

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the soil is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
