The designation "Iris x barb. -elat. i.S." refers to the Tall Bearded Iris in a broader sense (im weiteren Sinne). This is not a specific cultivar, but rather a collective term used to describe the large group of garden hybrid irises that are characterized by their tall flower stalks and the distinctive "beards" on their lower petals (falls).

These irises are the result of extensive hybridization over centuries, involving various Iris species to create the diverse range of colors, forms, and sizes we see today. The "x barb. -elat." part stands for Iris x barbata elatior, meaning "tall bearded iris," highlighting their most recognizable features. The "i.S." (im Sinne) emphasizes that it's a general category rather than a single botanical entity.

Growth

Upright and clump-forming perennials, forming attractive fans of foliage. Height can vary significantly depending on the specific cultivar, ranging from 0.7 - 1.2 m (2.3-4 ft) for standard tall bearded types.

Leaf

Deciduous, sword-shaped, and typically a lovely blue-green color. They provide structural interest in the garden even when not in bloom.

Flower

Showy, large, and highly diverse flowers in an incredible array of colors (from pure white to almost black, including blues, purples, yellows, oranges, reds, and multi-colors). They all feature the characteristic fuzzy "beard" on the falls. Bloom time is typically late spring to early summer (May to June), with some modern cultivars offering rebloom in late summer or fall.

Location

Thrive in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) for optimal flowering. Good air circulation is crucial to prevent fungal diseases.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 3-9), reliably overwintering outdoors.

Soil

Prefer well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Excellent drainage is critical; heavy, wet soils should be avoided as they can lead to rhizome rot. Rhizomes should be planted just at or slightly above the soil surface.

Use

Excellent for perennial borders, mixed beds, rock gardens, cottage gardens, and formal plantings. Their dramatic blooms make them fantastic specimen plants and provide superb cut flowers.

Water

Low to medium water requirement. Once established, they are drought-tolerant. Water during prolonged dry spells, especially during the blooming period, but always ensure proper drainage.

Care

Generally low-maintenance. Remove spent flower stalks after blooming. Divide overcrowded clumps every 3-5 years in late summer (July-September) to maintain vigor and flowering. Promptly remove any yellow or diseased leaves.

Planting time

Best planted in late summer to early autumn (July-September) to allow roots to establish before winter. Spring planting is also possible but autumn is often preferred.

Others

The rhizomes of irises can be toxic if ingested.
