The Sheep's Fescue 'Solling' (Festuca ovina) is a tough and undemanding, evergreen ornamental grass prized for its dense, clump-forming habit and its fine, blue-gray foliage. It forms compact, often cushion-like tufts of very narrow, almost needle-like leaves that display an attractive, slightly bluish color throughout the year. From May to June, delicate, inconspicuous, greenish to slightly purplish flower panicles also emerge, rising elegantly above the foliage and turning light brown when seeds ripen. In a sunny location with dry, well-drained, and nutrient-poor soil, it typically reaches a height of approximately 0.2 - 0.4 m (foliage height approx. 15-20 cm) and grows to about 0.2 - 0.35 m wide.

Growth

Sheep's Fescue 'Solling' is a compactly clump-forming and cushion-forming ornamental grass. It typically reaches a height of 0.2 - 0.4 m and grows to about 0.2 - 0.35 m wide.

Leaf

The evergreen leaves of Sheep's Fescue 'Solling' are very fine, linear, and display a striking blue-gray coloration. This color persists throughout the year and is particularly intense in full sun.

Flower

The delicate, inconspicuous flower panicles appear from May to June. They are initially greenish and then take on a light brown to slightly purplish hue. They are less prominent than the foliage.

Root

Festuca ovina 'Solling' is a shallow-rooted plant that forms a dense, fibrous root system.

Location

Bevorzugter Standort in voller Sonne. Direkte Sonneneinstrahlung und trockene Bedingungen fördern die kompakte Form und die intensive Blattfarbe.

Frost hardiness

Sheep's Fescue 'Solling' exhibits very good frost hardiness (down to approx. -40°C). It is extremely robust against cold.

Soil

Dry, well-drained, mineral, nutrient-poor, and neutral to slightly acidic soil is preferred. Waterlogging is the plant's biggest enemy and must be strictly avoided.

Use

Rock gardens, gravel gardens, green roofs, trough plantings, as ground cover in full sun areas, for edging paths or borders, in naturalistic gardens, and as a lawn substitute. It is an excellent choice for low-maintenance and extremely drought-tolerant garden designs.

Water

The plant has a low water requirement. Once established, it is extremely drought-tolerant and can thrive in prolonged dry periods without additional watering.

Care

Pruning of spent flower stalks is possible to maintain a tidy appearance. The foliage itself should only be combed or cleaned in early spring to remove dead blades. Fertilization is generally not necessary and can even lead to undesirably lush growth.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the ground is frozen or during extreme summer heat (above 30°C). However, the best planting time is spring or autumn.
