The Tall Bearded Iris 'Bianca' is a classic and elegant cultivar, celebrated for its pristine white, ruffled blooms and impressive stature. As a 'bearded' iris, it features a fuzzy "beard" on the lower petals, adding to its charm. It's a striking addition to sunny borders and perennial beds.

Growth

Upright and clump-forming. Typically reaches a height of 0.8 - 1.0 m (2.6-3.3 ft) and spreads about 0.3 - 0.5 m (1-1.6 ft) wide.

Leaf

Deciduous, sword-shaped, and a beautiful blue-green. They form attractive fans that provide structure in the garden.

Flower

Large, showy, pure white flowers with ruffled edges and a prominent white "beard". Blooms appear in late spring to early summer (May to June).

Location

Thrives in full sun (at least 6 hours direct sunlight daily) for optimal flowering. Good air circulation is beneficial.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 3-9). Reliably overwinters outdoors.

Soil

Prefers well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Good drainage is crucial; avoid heavy, wet soils. Plant rhizomes just at or slightly above the soil surface.

Use

Excellent for perennial borders, mixed beds, rock gardens, cottage gardens, and as cut flowers. Its striking white blooms create a beautiful contrast with other colors.

Water

Low to medium water requirement. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. Water during prolonged dry spells, especially during bloom, but ensure good drainage.

Care

Generally low maintenance. Remove spent flower stalks after blooming. Divide overcrowded clumps every 3-5 years in late summer (July-September in your location in Ketzin) to maintain vigor and flowering. Remove any yellow or diseased leaves.

Planting time

Best planted in late summer to early autumn (July-September) in your region, allowing roots to establish before winter. Can also be planted in spring, but autumn planting is often preferred.

Others

The rhizomes of Irises can be toxic if ingested.
