'Biedermeier' is a popular group of compact, short-lived perennial Columbines offering a delightful mix of pastel flower colors. It brings a whimsical touch and early spring bloom to the garden.

Growth

Clump-forming perennial. Grows 20-45 cm (8-18 inches) tall and 20-40 cm (8-16 inches) wide.

Leaf

Deciduous (or summer green). Blue-green, finely cut, lobed foliage.

Flower

Abundant double, spurred, bell-shaped flowers in a mix of pastel shades including pink, red, blue, purple, and white (often bi-colored). Blooms from April to July. Attracts pollinators.

Location

Prefers full sun to partial shade. Best flowering in partial shade, especially in warmer climates.

Location

Excellent (USDA Zones 3-8, hardy down to -40°C / -40°F).

Soil

Needs moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Tolerates various pH levels.

Water

Medium water needs. Keep consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Tolerates some drought once established.

Use

Ideal for cottage gardens, woodland edges, borders, rock gardens, and as cut flowers. Naturalizes well.

Care

Low maintenance. Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms and prevent excessive self-seeding (though it often self-seeds). Cut back foliage after flowering if it looks untidy. Can be short-lived but often self-sows.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring. Can also be grown from seed (sow in spring or late summer).
