'Major' is a robust and long-lived cultivar of Hairy Spurge, valued for its bright, chartreuse-yellow bracts that provide a striking early spring display and its attractive, deep green foliage. It's a reliable, low-maintenance perennial for sunny to partially shaded spots.

Growth

Clump-forming perennial. Forms a dense, bushy mound. Reaches 50-70 cm (20-28 inches) tall and 40-60 cm (16-24 inches) wide.

Leaf

Deciduous. Oblong to lance-shaped, fresh green foliage that emerges in spring, creating a vibrant backdrop for the flowers.

Flower

Showy, lime-green to chartreuse-yellow bracts (modified leaves that look like flowers) form dense, flattened clusters atop the stems. Blooms profusely from April to June. Provides excellent early season color.

Location

Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Tolerates more shade than many other Euphorbias.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 4-8). Very cold-hardy.

Soil

Adaptable. Prefers well-drained soil, but tolerates a range of soil types, including clay, as long as it's not waterlogged.

Water

Medium water requirement. Drought-tolerant once established, but appreciates consistent moisture during dry periods.

Use

Ideal for perennial borders, rock gardens, naturalistic plantings, and as groundcover. Provides strong textural and color contrast.

Care

Low maintenance. Cut back faded flower stems in early summer to prevent self-seeding and maintain tidiness. Wear gloves when handling, as the milky sap can be irritating.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.
