This refers to the common Lenten Rose hybrids derived from Helleborus orientalis and other species, generally grown from seed, leading to a charming variety of flower colors and forms. These are popular early spring bloomers, providing essential color when little else is in flower.

Growth

Clump-forming perennial. Grows 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) tall and 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) wide.

Leaf

Evergreen. Large, deeply lobed, leathery, dark green foliage provides year-round interest.

Flower

Showy, often nodding, cup-shaped flowers in a wide range of colors including white, pink, purple, red, yellow, green, often with speckles or contrasting centers. Blooms from February to April (or even earlier in mild climates). Attracts early pollinators.

Location

Thrives in partial to full shade. Protect from harsh winter winds and strong afternoon sun.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 4-9). Very cold-hardy.

Soil

Prefers organically rich, fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Tolerates neutral to alkaline pH. Dislikes waterlogged conditions.

Water

Medium water needs. Keep consistently moist, especially during dry spells; less water needed in summer dormancy.

Use

Ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders, underplanting deciduous trees/shrubs, and containers. Provides vital winter and early spring interest.

Care

Low maintenance. Cut back old, tattered foliage in late winter before new growth and flowers emerge to improve appearance and prevent leaf spot diseases. Established plants often self-seed, creating naturalized clumps.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.
