The Greater periwinkle (Vinca major) is a creeping, mat-forming, evergreen perennial that produces blue-violet, wheel-shaped flowers from May to September. Its leathery, heart-shaped, ciliated leaves are dark green. In a sunny to shady location with well-drained, humus-rich, loose, nutrient-rich soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 40 cm and grows to a width of approx. 80 cm. The Greater periwinkle is well tolerant of frost.

Growth

Greater periwinkle is a creeping and mat-forming semi-shrub that can reach a height of 30 - 40 cm and a width of 40 - 80 cm.

The evergreen leaves of the Greater periwinkles are dark green, heart-shaped, leathery, opposite and ciliate. They are about 3 - 7 cm in size.

Flower

Vinca major forms wheel-shaped, blue-violet flowers from May. These grow to about 3 - 4 cm in size.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to shady position.

The Greater periwinkle has good frost hardiness.

Use

Water

Water regularly and allow the soil to dry out in the meantime.

Care

- If the plant is divided every 2-3 years and weak roots and shoots are removed, the reward is better growth and flowering vigour!
- Cut back boldly in spring so that the plant grows compactly.
