'Nadezhda' is a beautiful common lilac cultivar, celebrated for its large, strongly fragrant, double flowers. Its purple-pink buds open to reveal exquisite lilac-blue blooms, providing a prolonged, stunning display in late spring.

Growth

An upright, spreading deciduous shrub. It typically reaches 2.5-4 meters (8-13 feet) in height and 2.5-4 meters (8-13 feet) in spread, forming a dense, bushy habit.

Leaf

Ovate to heart-shaped, mid-green deciduous leaves.

Flower

Produces dense, conical panicles of strongly fragrant, double lilac-blue flowers that open from striking purple-pink buds. It blooms profusely from late spring to early summer (May-June).

Location

Thrives best in full sun for optimal flowering. It can tolerate light partial shade.

Frost hardiness

Excellent (USDA Zones 3-8), very cold-hardy.

Soil

Prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil. It adapts to various soil types but dislikes acidic or waterlogged conditions.

Water

Has a medium water requirement. Benefits from consistent moisture, especially during dry periods.

Use

Ideal as a specimen plant, in mixed shrub borders, informal hedges, or as a fragrant addition to cottage gardens and pollinator gardens. Excellent for cut flowers.

Care

Low maintenance. Prune immediately after flowering to remove spent blooms and shape the plant, encouraging blooms for the next year.

Planting time

Best planted in autumn or early spring.
