The Yellow Flag Iris 'Golden Queen' is a robust and highly ornamental aquatic perennial, celebrated for its vibrant golden-yellow flowers and strong upright growth. It's a popular choice for water gardens, pond edges, and boggy areas, adding a striking vertical accent and brilliant color.

Growth

Upright and clump-forming, it typically reaches a height of 0.8 - 1.5 m (2.6-5 ft) and spreads about 0.6 - 1.0 m (2-3.3 ft) wide.

Leaf

Deciduous, long, sword-shaped, and a vibrant medium to dark green. They provide a strong vertical element even when the plant isn't in bloom.

Flower

Showy, large, intense golden-yellow flowers with distinctive brownish-purple veining on the falls. Blooms appear profusely from May to July.

Location

Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun promotes the best flowering. It is an aquatic or bog plant, requiring consistently wet conditions.

Frost hardiness

Very good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 4-9). It overwinters reliably in temperate climates.

Soil

Prefers heavy, moist to wet, rich, and loamy soils. It can grow in standing water up to about 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) deep, or in very wet boggy ground.

Use

Excellent for pond edges, stream banks, bog gardens, wet meadows, and aquatic planters. Its strong vertical form and bright flowers make it a fantastic architectural plant for water features.

Water

High water requirement. Needs consistently wet to saturated soil, or can be planted directly in shallow water.

Care

Generally low maintenance. Remove spent flower stalks to prevent self-seeding (it can spread vigorously in ideal conditions). Divide established clumps every few years in spring or autumn to maintain vigor and control spread.

Planting time

Container plants can be planted from spring to early autumn, ensuring they have time to establish before winter.
