The Purple ground clematis 'Purpurea' (Clematis recta) is a bushy, upright perennial with decorative, pinnate, dark red leaves. From June to July, it bears white, star-shaped flowers arranged in umbels with a pleasant fragrance. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, humus-rich, loose soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 1.3 m and grows to a width of approx. 80 cm. The Purple ground clematis 'Purpurea' is well tolerant of frost.
