'Blanche de His' is a stunning tree peony known for its charming, changing flower colors and robust growth. It's a wonderful choice for adding a touch of classic beauty and substantial form to your garden.

Growth

This is a medium-strong growing, upright, and bushy deciduous shrub. It generally reaches a height of 1.0 - 1.5 m (3.3-5 ft) and a similar spread of 1.0 - 1.5 m (3.3-5 ft) wide. Tree peonies are slow to moderate growers, especially when young, but can be very long-lived, becoming garden heirlooms.

Leaf

Deciduous, the foliage is typically a fresh medium green, deeply divided into attractive leaflets.

Flower

The standout feature of 'Blanche de His' is its semi-double to fully double flowers, which can be quite large, around 14-15 cm (5.5-6 inches) in diameter. The flowers emerge as a delicate pink or reddish-purple with darker centers, gradually fading to a more whitish or creamy white as they mature. This color transition provides an extended period of interest. It blooms in May to June, depending on your climate, and has a medium fragrance.

Location

Prefers full sun to light shade. Full sun generally encourages the most abundant blooms. However, in hotter climates or areas with intense afternoon sun, some dappled shade can help prolong the life of the blooms. Choose a site sheltered from strong winds to protect the large, delicate flowers and brittle woody stems. Protecting emerging buds from late spring frosts can also be beneficial.

Frost hardiness

Good frost hardiness (USDA Zones 5-8). It reliably overwinters outdoors due to its woody structure. In colder parts of Zone 5, some winter protection like a light mulch around the base or burlap wrap for young plants can be beneficial.

Location

Thrives in deep, fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil. It's adaptable to a range of soil pH (acidic to slightly alkaline), but excellent drainage is critical. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, especially in winter, as this can lead to root rot.

Use

An outstanding specimen plant for borders, cottage gardens, or as a focal point in a mixed shrub planting. Its large, evolving blooms make it a dramatic addition to any landscape.

Water

Medium water requirement. Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry spells and the plant's establishment phase. Established plants show some drought tolerance.

Care

Relatively low maintenance once established. Minimal pruning is typically needed; only remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Avoid cutting into old wood unnecessarily. Mulching around the base can help maintain soil moisture and protect the root zone. If grafted, ensure the graft union is planted 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) below the soil surface to encourage the tree peony to form its own root system. It's generally considered resistant to deer.

Planting time

The ideal time to plant tree peonies is in autumn (September to November), as this allows the plant to establish its root system before winter. Early spring planting (March to April) is also possible before new growth fully emerges.
