The Japanese flag (Iris ensata) is a rhizome-forming perennial that produces purple flowers from June to July. Its lanceolate leaves are medium green in colour. In a sunny location with humus-rich, lime-free, weakly acidic soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 90 cm and is approx. 50 cm wide. The Japanese flag is well tolerant of frost in sheltered locations.
