The Siberian bugloss (Brunnera macrophylla) is a spreading, broad perennial with decorative, heart-shaped, dark green leaves. From April to May, it bears blue, wheel-shaped flowers arranged in panicles. In a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, humus-rich, nutrient-rich, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of approx. 40 cm and is approx. 40 cm wide. The Siberian bugloss is well tolerant of frost.

Growth

Spreading, broad.

Leaves

High leaf ornamental value. The deciduous leaves of the Siberian bugloss are dark green, heart-shaped.

Flower

Brunnera macrophylla forms wheel-shaped, blue flowers arranged in panicles from April.

Location

Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady position.

Frost hardiness

The Siberian bugloss has good frost hardiness.

Soil

Normal soil.

Use

Pruning, group planting, bee pasture, woodland edge

Water

Water regularly and allow the soil to dry out in the meantime.

Care

- If the plant is divided every 2-3 years and weak roots and shoots are removed, the reward is better growth and flowering vigour!
- If the plant is watered less frequently but thoroughly and penetratingly, the plant roots are encouraged to penetrate into deeper soil layers. This enables the plant to survive dry periods better.

Planting partner

The Siberian bugloss sets beautiful accents together with:
Carnation-like woodland stonecrop, nettle-leaved bellflower.

Planting time

Planting: Autumn, depending on variety also in spring.
