Plant of the month for January: Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn' (Bodnant winter snowball)

In January we are putting a colorful winter bloomer in the spotlight: the Winter snowball “Dawn”. When many plants enter a dormant phase, this shrub really blooms. Depending on the weather, this shrub blooms from November to April.

A feast for the eyes in the cold season

The leaves of the winter viburnum are long and lanceolate and arranged in clusters. Its color is summery green, the petiole is red and in autumn the leaf color turns beautifully red to dark purple. Its flower buds are dark pink and pink. The flowers, which have 5 petals and grow in umbrella panicles, shine pink-white. They exude a sweet scent that is loved not only by humans but also by insects. So it's no wonder that the winter snowball is often planted along paths or sitting areas.

Sprawling, bushy and perfect in front of green hedges

The winter snowball grows around 20 cm a year, is between two and 2.50 meters high and up to 2.50 meters wide. The basic branches grow tightly upright, are sparsely branched and later become sprawling and bushy. This plant is a great eye-catcher, especially in front of green hedges.

The optimal soil, location and cut for the winter viburnum

In general, the shrub is soil-tolerant, frost-hardy and copes well with the city climate! It prefers sandy-loamy, fresh, moist soil that is humus and slightly acidic to slightly alkaline. A permeable soil is ideal to avoid waterlogging.

The location should be sunny to partially shaded and ideally protected from the wind. Attention: Since the shrub forms runners, it is better to plant it at a distance from other plants, fences, walls or buildings.

Typically, the winter viburnum only needs pruning if you want to remove dead wood or maintain a certain shape. This maintenance cut is best done after the flowering period.
