Plant of the month for February - Wintergreen olive willow

Mock hazel, winter cherry - we have already introduced you to the best-known early-flowering trees in recent years. That's why we're going green this February. The wintergreen olive willow 'Viveleg' (Elaeagnus ebbingei) retains its foliage in the otherwise bare season and is a pleasant change from the well-known evergreen trees.

This upright growing shrub not only cuts a fine figure as a solitary plant. It also impresses in group plantings, containers or even as a hedge, not least because of its striking foliage. The leaves of this olive willow variety are dark green-yellow variegated and, up to 15 cm long, have an oval shape and are larger than those of many other Elaeagnus varieties. As a rule, this olive willow is evergreen, but after particularly severe frosts it may drop its leaves. But don't worry - the leaves will sprout again in spring.

The wintergreen olive willow 'Viveleg' is quite undemanding and thrives in both sunny and partially shaded, dry to moist, acidic to slightly alkaline garden soils. At only 2 m, it remains slightly smaller than other varieties of Elaeagnus ebbingei. However, the flowering period of this shrub is even more unusual: October to November. Since nectar is rather scarce at this time, insects are particularly happy about the small white flowers of the olive willow.

Our conclusion: The wintergreen olive willow 'Viveleg' is a welcome change for the garden and is also an attractive plant for feeding insects.
