Cathedral' Elm (Ulmus 'Cathedral'): A Tree with Stance (and Heart)

Anyone who thinks elms are only for old avenues and dusty parks hasn't met the 'Cathedral'® elm. This medium-sized tree not only brings order to urban spaces but also a good dose of style to any garden or park.

Growth with Character

The 'Cathedral'® elm initially grows upright and vase-shaped—a bit like it's politely making room for everything around it. But with the years, it develops a broad, impressive crown that stretches over its surroundings like a green roof. It's ideal for anyone who wants to provide shade without having to plant a giant sequoia. At a height of 15–20 meters and a width of up to 15 meters, it's present without being ostentatious.

Simple Blossoms, Golden Show

Admittedly, the 'Cathedral'®'s blossoms aren't divas. From March to April, it displays inconspicuous but quite charming flowers, which later develop into flat, brown winged fruits—botanically correct, visually subtle. But in the fall, it truly shines: Its ovate, double-serrated leaves glow in a rich golden yellow. Autumn can come—and with style!

Down-to-Earth and Unpretentious—Mostly

This elm isn't delicate. It prefers sunny to semi-shady spots, likes well-drained, nutrient-rich soils, and handles moist to wet conditions just fine. It's a true survivor—also thanks to its strong heart root system, which reaches deep and wide. In other words: Windthrow? Hardly an issue. It doesn't particularly like dry periods, so please water it when summer switches to "desert climate" mode.

Easy to Care for, but with Standards

The good news: It doesn't need much care. A slow-release fertilizer in the spring helps it get off to a strong start. And those who begin with early training cuts will be rewarded with a stable and aesthetic crown—just like a good haircut: better regularly than radically.

Frost? So What?

The 'Cathedral'® is frost-hardy—and truly so. Winter can't do much to it; it remains steadfast where others get cold feet.
