Fences with a Twist: Flowering Shrubs as Privacy Screens

And berry bushes like blackberries and raspberries can not only productively separate a kitchen garden section from the ornamental garden, but also provide pretty blossoms and sweet berries.

And it doesn't always have to be a Thuja hedge that protects the garden from curious glances of passersby. Flowering quince, barberry, viburnum, ornamental cherries, mahonias, dogwood, or the European mock orange, although they need a bit more width to bloom profusely, bathe the garden in a true sea of blossoms every year.

Anyone who has once experienced a daisy, a hydrangea, or a weigela in full bloom will want to give such an eye-catcher a worthy setting through a corresponding bed in the ornamental lawn. Framed by some low-growing conifers, boxwood, or small grasses, such shrubs will attract the gaze of all observers for years. But of course, you can also put them in the spotlight by planting them in pairs next to a bench or on a trellis that is additionally equipped with a climbing plant.

Depending on the garden, flowering shrubs can also be planted in areas not suitable for lawns, thereby saving their owners the often arduous efforts to maintain a healthy lawn in shady or acidic parts of the garden. For acidic soil, for example, the hydrangea is grateful, whose blossoms bloom particularly blue at a low pH value.
